Landicho again inducted into Francis Parker Hall of Fame

10/21/11 - Mesa MVB head coach John Landicho was inducted into the Francis Parker School Hall of Fame, for the third time. This time, he was honored along with the other members of the School's 2005 boy's volleyball team, which finished the season as CIF-SDS champions & ranked #1 in San Diego County, and was chosen CalHiSports.com 2005 State Team of the Year, for all sports.

Landicho spent 22 seasons as an assistant coach at Francis Parker and led Lancer volleyball teams to 48 championships, including 15 CIF-SDS Championships, four Southern California regional titles, girls CIF State Championships in 1998, 2004, & 2005, and four season-ending #1 rankings in San Diego County. He was previously honored for his work with the School's standout 1998 boy's and 1998 girl's volleyball teams. He is in his fourth year leading Mesa's men's volleyball program.

Ferback heads to Fontbonne University

8/20/11 - Mesa men's volleyball S Corey Ferback will join the men's volleyball program at NCAA D-III Fontbonne University, this Fall.

Ferback, from Patrick Henry HS in San Diego, came to Mesa in 2010 as a transfer from Grossmont College and assumed the starting setter's position for the Olympians for the 2011 season. Mesa MVB congratulates Corey on his acceptance to Fontbonne, and looks forward to following his playing career with the Griffins.

Annen on his way to U. of North Carolina

7/21/11 - Mesa men's volleyball OH/L/DS Brian Annen will attend the University of North Carolina, this Fall. Annen will go to Chapel Hill with a partial academic scholarship, and will join the highly regarded Entrepreneurial program in the University's Department of Economics.

Annen, a sophomore by class standing from Pt. Loma HS in San Diego, came to Mesa in 2010 as a transfer from Penn State University. He filled outside hitter, libero, and defensive specialist roles as a part-time starter for the Olympians. Mesa MVB congratulates Brian on his acceptance to UNC, and looks forward to hearing of his future success as a student and businessman.

Landicho to again coach in USA Volleyball A3 camp

5/15/11 – Mesa MVB coach John Landicho will again be a part of the coaching staff of USA Volleyball's High Performance A3 and Youth Training Camp, July 9-13. Coaching again at the request of camp head coach John Crutchfield of Long Beach State, Landicho will work with some 50 of the best sophomores and juniors in the nation, identified in USAV HiPo tryouts throughout the nation.

“Working for USA Volleyball is always an honor, and coaching with “Crutch” and the rest of his staff is a lot of fun,” says Landicho. “It also helps me keep up to date with the latest techniques from the National Team gym, which we can integrate into Mesa's program.”

Landicho previously was invited to be an assistant coach for the 2011 USA Select A2 team, but had to decline the invitation due to academic reasons; he is completing his Master's degree this summer, and his coursework demands would have conflicted with that assignment. He coached in the A3/Youth Training camp last year, and has also assisted in the USAV HiPo Holiday Camp the last two Decembers.

Mesa MVB announces 2011 team award winners

5/15/11 – At the team's end-of-season banquet, the Mesa men's volleyball program honored the following team members:

Most Valuable – J.J. Snarponis

Most Improved – Jarom Warren

Coaches' Award – Dustin Pelloni, David Ertley

The team's All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference honorees, Snarponis (All-PCAC first team) and freshman libero Travis Wefald (All-PCAC second team) also received plaques signifying their status on the all-conference teams.

Snarponis, Wefald earn All-PCAC honors

4/15/11 – Mesa MVB players J.J. Snarponis and Travis Wefald were honored by the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, for their play during the 2011 season.

Snarponis, a sophomore OH from Mar Vista HS/Imperial Beach, CA, earned All-PCAC first team honors. Wefald, a freshman L from Granite Bay HS/Granite Bay, CA, was named to the All-PCAC second team. Congratulations to both J.J. and Travis for this honor.

Palomar edges past Mesa MVB, 3-2

4/15/11 – In the season closer for both squads, the Palomar men's volleyball team edged SD Mesa, 25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-10, at the Mesa Gymnasium.

It was a back & forth affair, with the teams exchanging momentum and set wins all night. Lineup changes proved fortuitous in sets two and four for Mesa, but a run midway through set five gave the Comets a comfortable margin to take the final set and the match.

OH J.J. Snarponis closed out his Mesa career with 15 kills, 6 blocks, and five digs. OPP Matt Hanson posted nine kills and five digs in three sets of play, while MB Jarom Warren added seven kills on .460 hitting along with six blocks. S Corey Ferback had 41 assists, and L Travis Wefald tallied 18 digs on the night.

The team honored Snarponis, Ferback, and OH's Stuart Corbett and Brian Annen, who were completing their Mesa MVB careers with the match. The Olympians closed out the 2011 season with a record of 3-17, but look forward as 10 of 15 members on the roster will return for the 2012 season.

Corbett earns Air Force Academy appointment

3/31/11 - Sophomore OH Stuart Corbett has earned an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, CO. Corbett was nominated for the spot by Congressman Duncan D. Hunter, and was informed of his appointment earlier this week. The honor is rare; very few community college students earn an appointment to a U.S. service academy, in part because they are still required to spend a full four years at a service academy, essentially rendering their community college academic work moot. The full four-year scholarship is valued at $414,000.

A graduate of Ramona HS and hailing from Ramona, CA, Corbett is in his second season with the Olympians. After seeing reserve time as an OPP in 2010, Corbett moved to OH and has seen playing time in both starting and reserve roles ths season. He will report to the USAFA on June 26th. The Mesa MVB program proudly congratulates Stuart on this prestigious honor!

Grossmont reels off 3-0 sweep of Mesa MVB

3/25/11 - PCAC leader Grossmont showed off why it's leading the conference, using its superior athleticism & height and fast-tempo game to post a 25-13, 25-18, 25-20 sweep of the visiting Mesa MVB team.

The Olympians could not muster any offense on the night, as they hit -.100 on the evening. Mesa's best play came in game three, when they managed to go point-for-point with the Griffins until a late Grossmont run and a couple of Mesa errors gave the match to the Griffins.

OPP Matt Hanson led Mesa with six kills, while OH J.J. Snarponis managed only four kills before he was pulled from the match after game two due to ongoing shoulder bursitis. S Corey Ferback and L Tanner Burningham had six and five digs, respectively. Mesa continues its extended road swing when it travels to Irvine Valley on Wednesday, March 30 for a 6:00 pm match.

Mesa earns first PCAC win of 2011, 3-2 over Palomar

3/23/11 – The visiting Mesa MVB team overcame an 0-2 game deficit to post its first PCAC win of 2011, 19-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-17, 16-14 over Palomar, at the Dome.

Mesa squandered multiple leads in game one, and then turned in a dismal performance in game two. Multiple lineup changes and a return to a 5-1 offense sparked the Olympians, who sandwiched an easy game four win around two grueling wins in games three and five.

OH J.J. Snarponis, hampered by a shoulder injury and limited to back row play only in the first and second games, played all the way around down the stretch and tallied 19 kills on .310 hitting, while adding 12 digs and five blocks. OPP Matt Hanson added 11 kills, and libero Tanner Burningham added 12 digs. Setter Corey Ferback had his best match of the season, with 40 assists and 14 digs.

Mesa's road swing continues this Friday, as the Olympians travel to PCAC leader Grossmont. The match time for Friday's tilt has been moved back, to 7:00 pm.

Mesa MVB squeaks past USMC Camp Pendleton, 3-2

3/9/11 – A vastly improved varsity team from US Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton gave the Mesa MVB team all it could handle, but in the end the Olympians ground out a 25-12, 21-25, 21-25, 25-12, 15-10 win, at Camp Pendleton.

After an easy set one win, the Olympians sat OH J.J. Snarponis and MB Jarom Warren, for health reasons. The Guardians took advantage of their absence and, aided by a spirited home crowd, won the next two sets. Snarponis came off the bench in set four to steady Mesa's play, and Mesa would take advantage of their reclaimed momentum to claim the last two sets and the match win.

Snarponis finished the night with 12 kills on .579 hitting in three sets of play, and added 12 digs. OPP Matt Hanson had 12 kills, three blocks, and eight digs, while OH Ryan Hanson added 11 kills. S Corey Ferback tallied 40 assists, while MB Tyler Owen chipped in seven kills and four blocks.

Mesa sweeps USMC Camp Pendleton on Armed Forces Night.

2/25/11 – The Mesa MVB team pounded out a 25-13, 25-9, 25-13 win over the Guardians of US Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, on Armed Forces Night at the Mesa Gymnasium.

Playing their first match since the program was reinstated in the Fall of 2010, the inexperience of the Guardians showed as Mesa put together strong play all night to overpower the Marine team. The Guardians were especially vulnerable in serve receive, where a strong Mesa serving game resulted in multiple point scoring opportunities in transition.

OH J.J. Snarponis had eight kills on .500 hitting, and added four digs. MB Tyler Owen also hit .500 with five kills, and added five aces. Setters Corey Ferback and Dustin Pelloni evenly split 26 assists on the night, as every player suited up for the Olympians saw action in the match.

$107.25 was raised on the evening from spectator donations, in support of the Semper Fi Fund.

Mesa MVB to host Camp Pendleton MVB on Armed Forces Night

2/18/11 – The Mesa MVB program will host the men's volleyball team from US Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton on Friday, February 25. The evening has been designated “Mesa MVB Armed Forces Night”, with all military and dependents admitted free of charge with their military ID. Normal Mesa College parking fees have also been waived for this event. In addition, donations will be accepted for the Semper Fi Fund, a Camp Pendleton-based foundation which assists injured or critically ill Marines and other members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The match, and a second match between the two teams to be played at Camp Pendleton on March 9th, are a result of a request from Camp Pendleton coach Adam Miller to Mesa MVB coach John Landicho, for a couple of matches for the USMC team. Marines on the team are training for tryouts for the All-Marine team, which then goes on to compete with other teams representing the other branches of the U.S. military. The Feb. 25 match will be the first competitive match for these Marines, which reinstated its volleyball program under Coach Miller's leadership in September of 2010.

“Mesa men's volleyball is extremely proud to support these Marines in their volleyball journey,” says Coach Landicho. “For us to help them with something that provides critical balance in their lives, is so small an act compared to the important jobs they do in protecting our country. We are grateful for their service & for the opportunity to help them out.”
