Welcome to May, the culmination of another year at San Diego Mesa College. May is filled with celebrations of all sorts, including the highlight of the school year, Commencement. Please join us for any and all the following events!
Through May 6 – Mesa College Theatre Company Presents “The Boys Next Door,” Tom Griffin's "The Boys Next Door" delves into the lives of four mentally-challenged men and their caretaker, all of whom must define for themselves the meaning of their lives and what constitutes success. 5/11-20 Theatrical Premiere: No Child, by Nilaja Sun. Mission Productions, in collaboration with the Mesa College Drama Department, is proud to present the San Diego premiere of No Child, by Nilaja Sun. Sun spent six weeks teaching/directing a play during No Child Left Behind. The play is Our Country's Good, which is about a group of Australian royal marines and convicts putting on a production of The Recruiting Officer. The playwright performs No Child. . . as a one-woman show and licenses it out for theatrical productions. Mesa College acting students work alongside professional actors for this San Diego premiere. 5/12– 13th Annual Animal Health Technology Pet Wash, Open House and Program Orientation; an educational event that coincides with National Pet Week and is open to the public. A dog/cat wash fundraiser and a program orientation will follow. Students will be able to create poster projects and scenarios on pet health designed to educate the audience, and tour the facility, and meet the resident animals (dogs, cats, goats, bobcat, owls, turkey vulture, ferrets, and lizard). 4/12 -- Environmental Stewardship Committee Speaker Series Lecture: Prof. Alexander Gershunov, a researcher in Climate, Atmospheric Science, and Physical Oceanography (CASPO) from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. 3/15– Biology Department Presents: Ryan Levinson. Ryan is the EMS/Rescue Manager for the Big Wave World Tour and an EMT with the City of San Diego. The Mesa College student has competed in over 40 triathlons, and has placed top-3 in national and world championship events while also pursuing his passion for surfing, bodysurfing, kite boarding, and sailing. All this despite having a form of Muscular Dystrophy which has caused many of his muscles to atrophy. Come and hear this uplifting story about overcoming obstacles by this truly remarkable young man.
